Stomach and Esophagus Tumor Center
The University Hospital Zurich has a supraregional importance in the treatment of tumors of the esophagus and the stomach. A special feature of our center is the close networking of the different disciplines. Due to the intensive interdisciplinary exchange between surgeons, gastroenterologists, oncologists and radio-oncologists, we are able to offer the entire range of current therapy concepts. The close cooperation with our anesthesiologists and intensive care physicians and the consistent use of minimally invasive surgical procedures also enables us to offer safe surgical care, even for high-risk patients.
Today, a variety of endoscopic interventional and surgical procedures are available for the treatment of tumors of the esophagus and stomach. These must be adapted to the individual situation of the patients, which is why each case is first discussed in our interdisciplinary tumor board (see below). As a general rule, optimal oncological treatment should be accompanied by the least possible burden on patients, which is why more than 90% of our surgical interventions are by now minimally invasive (keyhole surgery without a large incision in the stomach or chest).
A detailed description of the treatment of gastric carcinoma or esophageal carcinoma can be found by clicking on the respective links.
The interdisciplinary tumor board for patients with malignant diseases of the upper gastrointestinal tract is held weekly on Monday at 16:00. Within the framework of this board, patients from the University Hospital Zurich as well as external institutions will be discussed with their medical history and all current findings. Interdisciplinary therapy recommendations are expressed and documented.
For external medical colleagues it is possible to present their patients either personally with the request for co-evaluation or to submit the relevant findings for this conference.
The contact persons for the interdisciplinary Tumor Board are the Chief Physician of Visceral Surgery, Prof. Dr. med. Christian A. Gutschow (email@example.com), or the Chief Physician of Medical Oncology, Prof. Dr. med. Bernhard Pestalozzi (firstname.lastname@example.org).
