Colorectal Cancer Center

The diagnosis and treatment of colorectal cancers present a particular challenge. Numerous specializations of modern medicine are involved both in terms of diagnosis – gastroenterology, pathology, radiology – and treatment – visceral surgery, radio-oncology, gastroenterology, medical oncology – of colorectal tumor diseases. In other words, this is an extremely interdisciplinary field that relies on excellent cooperation between the different specializations. The USZ Colorectal Cancer Center serves as a center of excellence to facilitate those efforts.

Treatment

Treatment of colon cancer

For the treatment of colon cancer (also known as colon carcinoma), the site of the tumor in the colon is of critical importance. A distinction is drawn between colon cancer (colon carcinoma) and rectal cancer (rectal carcinoma). University Hospital Zurich offers all modern treatment methods, including minimally invasive operations, and treatment is provided in interprofessional teams.

Research & trials

Research & trials

Treatments in the context of therapy trials are aimed at further improving the treatment of colon tumors. Therapy trials are conducted in close collaboration between the Colorectal Cancer Center Zurich and research organizations such as the Swiss Group for Clinical Cancer Research (SAKK), the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) and the Swiss pharmaceutical industry. We currently offer clinical trials for patients with colorectal cancers in both the early and more advanced stages.

The list of currently ongoing trials being conducted at the Colorectal Cancer Center can be found here.

Tumor board & Second Opinion

Tumor board

An interdisciplinary colorectal tumor board is held weekly on Mondays at 4:00 pm. In this forum, patients from University Hospital Zurich and external institutions are presented with their medical histories and all current findings. Interdisciplinary therapy recommendations are discussed and documented.

External medical colleagues have the opportunity to either present their patients personally and request an evaluation or send us their relevant information for consideration in the forum.

Colorectal cancer tumor board contact

The contacts for the colorectal cancer board are Visceral Surgery Head Physician PD Dr. Matthias Turina (matthias.turina@usz.ch) or the Head Physician for Medical Oncology, Prof. Dr. Bernhard Pestalozzi (bernhard.pestalozzi@usz.ch).
