Head and Neck Tumor Center
The diagnosis and treatment of head and neck tumors present a particular challenge. Due to possible restrictions to essential functions like breathing, swallowing and speaking, the emphasis here is not only on healing the tumor disease, but also preserving functionality. Numerous specialist disciplines of modern medicine are involved both in terms of the diagnosis (pathology, neuroradiology) and treatment (otorhinolaryngology, Department of Cranio-Maxillo-Facial and Oral Surgery, Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology) of tumors in the central area. It is therefore a very interdisciplinary subject which depends on the excellent cooperation between the various disciplines.
The diagnosis and treatment of tumors of the head and neck are a focus of the institutions involved in the University Hospital Zurich Head and Neck Tumor Center. They are carried out according to guidelines coordinated on an interdisciplinary basis.
The care services encompass ongoing consultation, treatment and follow-up care for patients and their relatives in the canton of Zurich and other cantons in Switzerland, as well as care and advisory services for foreign patients, who do occasionally, albeit infrequently, seek care here.
Regular outpatient consultation hours for tumor patients are held by head doctors from the Department of ORL, MKG and Radiation Oncology from Monday through Friday. Emergency appointments can be made at any time.
Research & trials
Treatments in the context of clinical trials are geared towards further improving treatment and quality of life for patients with head and neck tumors. Therapy trials are conducted in close collaboration between the Head and Neck Tumor Center Zurich, the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) and the pharmaceutical industry. We currently offer clinical trials for patients with advanced head and neck tumors (AOC trial). Clinical trials also investigate the quality of treatment and the introduction of new surgical techniques.
The interdisciplinary head and neck tumor board takes place on Wednesday at 8:00 am, during which patients from the University Hospital of Zurich as well as external institutions with their medical history and all current findings, including pathology and imaging, are discussed. Interdisciplinary therapeutic recommendations are expressed and documented.
For external medical colleagues it is possible to present their patients either personally with the request for co-assessment or to provide us with the relevant findings for this board.
Contacts for this tumor board are Dr. Thomas Roth (firstname.lastname@example.org) or Dr. med. Dr. med. dent. Daniel Zweifel (Daniel.Zweifel@usz.ch).
